Al Quickel Employee Spotlight

AL QUICKEL, PSM

What inspired you to choose your career path?
I’ve always been good at Math, so I knew I wanted to work with something that would require complicated calculations. My grandfather was a surveyor in west Texas, and I remember going out with him with a chain and plumb bob, but at the time I had no idea what we were doing. I started college at New Mexico State University as a Civil Engineering major, which required a taking a couple of surveying classes. I found out that surveyors were essentially mathematicians who worked outdoors, so I switched to Surveying Engineering. I also found that history and law were important parts of surveying, as well as using the latest technology for measurements such as GPS and Laser Scanning.

What do you enjoy most about your job?
I enjoy problem solving in many different ways, from deciphering where an error occurred in a data collected file, to why a monument does not fit a boundary calculation or the other surrounding monuments. Of course, I also enjoy the calculations for boundaries, and alignments too. I love the math involved, even though it makes my kids think I’m strange.

What are you most passionate about?
Spending time with my family and riding my motorcycle.

What is your greatest challenge?
Networking and communication are my greatest challenges. I tend to get so wrapped up in a project that I forget to come up for air.

Name an important “lessons learned” moment you have experienced.
Getting proper QA/QC by another surveyor is crucial. When you work on a project for weeks or months, you get so familiar with it that you may not notice an error. Even if you don’t see it, the client will. Get everything checked before it goes out.
