BRIAN CROWL, PE

What inspired you to choose your career path?
I have several civil engineers in my family and I have always been interested in building things and figuring out how and why things work the way they do. When I started college, I was not 100 percent sure what I wanted to do, so I began pursuing a degree in Criminal Justice. During my junior year of college I started working in the soils laboratory at a geotechnical firm in Tallahassee, FL. This again sparked my interest in engineering and I decided that after I finished my degree in Criminal Justice I would go back and obtain a degree in Civil Engineering as well.

What do you enjoy most about your job?
I enjoy having the opportunity to work with a wide variety of people on an assortment of projects. A lot of these people have many more years of experience than I do, so I challenge myself to learn something new from everyone I work with. I look at every day on the job as a continuing educational experience.

What are you most passionate about?
The thing I am most passionate about is spending as much time with my wife as possible. We both work long hours during the week so I really cherish the time we have to hang out and pursue our hobbies together like fishing, kayaking and cooking. My wife is an avid marathon runner so I travel along to her races to support her and she comes to my grappling tournaments to support me when I compete.

What is your greatest challenge?
Finishing one task before I begin another. I have a tendency to work on multiple things at once, when I feel I would be more efficient if I could finish one task before starting two or three more.

Name an important “lessons learned” moment you have experienced.
Always being two steps ahead of the game. Every project I’ve been a part of has had unexpected events pop up. I’ve learned to always look ahead and try to anticipate possible issues and formulate a solution before they become actual problems.
