JEFF LOFLIN, PE

What inspired you to choose your career path?
My best subjects in high school were math and science.  Engineering was one of the careers recommended for me so I looked at the curriculums and decided to go into engineering.  However, after college a relative recommended a job in another field and I worked at an Eveready Battery factory for 12 years.  A reorganization of the business changed my work environment so I began to look for a job in the civil engineering field, even though I had been out for touch for several years.  I went to work for the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) as a Transportation Technician 1 and loved the work.  I retired 25 years later as District Engineer.  I recently changed my career “crossing the fence” to work at DRMP and I am able to be on construction projects again and I love it.

What do you enjoy most about your job?
I like the way I was immediately accepted as part of the DRMP Team from the very first day here.  Everyone is eager to share the knowledge I need to succeed here. I like to meet one-on-one to establish relationships, solve problems and enjoy the success of the solutions to those discussions.

What are you most passionate about?
I am most passionate about what is happening on the projects where the project envisioned maybe years earlier is now being constructed and how DRMP can aid in that process.  On the personal side, I live on a small cattle farm in Denton, North Carolina and enjoy the time spent away from everything enjoying the peace and quiet of living in the country.

What is your greatest challenge?
My greatest challenge, as I am just starting my career with DRMP, is learning the highway business from a new perspective and how to solve those challenges to have a win-win solution for all parties involved.

Name an important “lessons learned” moment you have experienced.
I was dealing with a complex problem on a construction project. I asked for help from several engineers in the organization and were given some great ideas but the best solution came from the technician on the project who had the most knowledge of all the factors involved.  I learned to listen to everyone involved and used input from everyone to have the best solution!
