Julian Poolel Employee Spotlight

JULIAN POOLE, PE

What inspired you to choose your career path?
My academic trajectory was pulling me towards engineering, and I settled on civil.  I have two brothers who are civil engineers and I guess you could say my older brother cleared the path.

What do you enjoy most about your job?
I work in a small office, so I get the opportunity to gain experience working on every aspect of a project.  There is a good balance of learning new things and maintaining my skills in areas that I already have experience in performing.

What are you most passionate about?
My passions consist of family life, church life, and as a hobby, cycling.  I am thankful to work in an office where a healthy work/personal life balance is encouraged.

What is your greatest challenge?
Some engineering problems are multi-faceted and we might look at them a hundred different ways in order to make a decision. Once the calculations are done, the information needs to be communicated clearly in a way that can be interpreted without any questions. Sometimes, the most challenging part is figuring out how to best present that technical concept within the limitations of a paper set of plans.

Name an important “lessons learned” moment you have experienced.
A project life cycle might span a number of years, and the specifications and standards are always changing which impacts your plans.  Before making a submittal, it is important to always review the latest criteria to ensure that your project is still within standards.
