MARK PROCHAK, PE

What inspired you to choose your career path?
My original interest was to become an operating engineer in the unions of Ohio. Basically a bulldozer driver. Ohio had a very unique structure based on unions and this proved to be a challenge. My back up plan was go to college and become a civil engineer. Met this goal and have not looked back. In hindsight the engineering degree proved to be much more beneficial than being a construction worker.

What do you enjoy most about your job?
It has changed over the years. Initially it was learning what went into a set of plans and then seeing projects get constructed. Currently, it is using my experience to help other staff learn what it means to be a civil engineering consultant. However, it is still nice to go back to my engineering roots and see projects go from plans to construction and then see final product.

What are you most passionate about?
Besides my family, which are in very small in numbers here in the United States, NASCAR and sweating the details. Being there to finish the job.

What is your greatest challenge?
Relaxing and not taking work so seriously. I am known as a person who drives myself and others. I need to slow down and make sure I appreciate both people and things in life.

Name an important “lessons learned” moment you have experienced.
Never burn bridges in this industry. Staff I worked with in Virginia ended up in Florida. We are a small group of individuals in this business and you never know where you may run into previous people. Also, I have matured to focus on what is really important and not let the small things get to me.
