MIKE LEO, PE

What inspired you to choose your career path?
After serving with the US Army in Korea, my father went on to college at Purdue University and ultimately graduated from Cincinnati with a degree in Civil Engineering.  He spent the early years of his career as a consultant in Miami and the last 25 years with the Federal Aviation Administration. My aptitude for math and encouragement from my father set me on this career path. Coupled with the fact that I can’t spell, engineering was the best option.

What do you enjoy most about your job?
I love working in a collaborative environment with all disciplines working toward and achieving a common goal and ultimately seeing our product constructed. My kids know every “Daddy’s Bridge” around town.

What are you most passionate about?
Watching my boys play soccer.

What is your greatest challenge?
In order to stay competitive, new technologies must be embraced. Whether it is advancement in software or new bridge types we must all stay current.

Name an important “lessons learned” moment you have experienced.
The most important lesson I share with others is that everyone you encounter from high school though college and into the workforce is important and should be treated with respect.  Former schoolmates and coworkers may eventually become your employer, boss or client.
