DRMP WINS ACEC ENGINEERING EXCELLENCE AWARD FOR
US 17-92 AT SR 436

Orlando, Fla. – Considered the “Academy Awards of the engineering industry”, DRMP’s US 17-92 at SR 436 project was chosen for the America Council of Engineering Companies’ (ACEC) Engineering Excellence National Recognition Award. Working with the Florida Department of Transportation’s (FDOT) District Five’s budget and accelerated schedule, DRMP staff’s innovative design transformed the interchange – one of the most congested intersections in Florida with 100,000 commuters daily, into a single point urban interchange with reduced commuter wait time that saved millions in taxpayer dollars.

Using groundbreaking bridge technology, DRMP’s design elevated four lanes of US 17-92 over SR 436 in Casselberry, Fla. just north of Orlando, Fla.  Instead of using the steel girders in a previous design, DRMP engineers used a forward-thinking design that required the unprecedented delivery and installation of 209-feet long, Florida I-Beam (FIB) concrete beams. The beams are the longest single-piece concrete beams ever fabricated and installed not just in Florida but the United States.

The flyover bridge was configured in three, simply supported, spans with a main span of 209-feet and two approach spans of 124-feet, totaling a length of 457-feet.  The approach spans consist of 78-in. deep FIBs and 96-in. deep FIBs (exterior), and the main span consists of 96-in FIBs.

Due to DRMP’s design approach, along with close and extensive coordination between all parties and major stakeholders, was designed and constructed with a $2 million savings to taxpayers and the FDOT. The project was completed more than a month before schedule, which was significant because work was just beginning on the FDOT’s massive $2 billion I-4 Ultimate Project for a major interstate, and the flyover bridge would aid in alleviate commuter traffic. The intersection improvements project has also made a large impact on the 100,000 daily commuters that travel the flyover bridge by drastically decreasing an average of five to 10 minutes in commute time.

DRMP is a multi-discipline firm serving clients in the public, private and industrial sectors in the development of infrastructure and has been in business since 1977.
