DRMP WINS APWA BIG BEND CHAPTER BEAUTIFICATION PROJECT OF THE YEAR AWARD
Tallahassee, Fla. – DRMP won the APWA Big Bend Chapter’s Beautification Project of the Year for its work that helped transform bare land into what is now the Fred George Greenway and Park for the Leon County Public Works Department.
Project Background
DRMP’s civil engineering and stormwater design services helped what was once bare parcels of land become the 175-acre recreation park, wildlife observatory, playground and cultural greenway for Leon County, Fla. residents and visitors to enjoy. The park also includes a natural and cultural museum, an education facility and sports fields.
DRMP’s designs were conscious of the public as well as the wildlife in the area. The design of a retrofitted pond provided an enhanced habitat for wood storks – a part of the park’s wildlife conservation mission. Sidewalks, landscaping and utilities designs aid the public in navigating the park and its trail systems and vegetative buffers and pervious pavers minimize stormwater runoff. Community involvement was a major part of the success of the park. The addition of a playground area was an idea that came directly from residents during the public meeting.
