DRMP WINS APWA FLORIDA CHAPTER - WEST COAST BRANCH TRANSPORTATION PROJECT OF THE YEAR AWARD

Tampa, Fla. – DRMP’s Transportation Project, the Hanley Road Safety Improvements Project for Hillsborough County, FL, was awarded the APWA West Coast Branch’s Transportation Project of the Year Award. Congratulations to the DRMP Tampa staff and Scott Garth, PE, LEED AP ND, DRMP Tampa Office Leader and Senior Project Manager, who led the project.

Project Background
DRMP performed roadway improvement engineering services to redesign a two-mile stretch of Hanley Road in Hillsborough County, FL, a high priority project for the County. Sidewalks, several transit bus stops, three schools and a mix of residential communities and business centers contributed to heavy pedestrian and vehicular traffic and numerous crashes along the corridor. DRMP pioneered an innovative safety implementation, sharrows –markings placed in the travel lane to indicate where people should preferably cycle. The sharrows, the first-ever in Hillsborough, County, FL, were used instead of bike lanes due to right-of-way and budget constraints without compromising the safety of the corridor. Raised medians were also installed to reduce collisions and to provide pedestrian refuge.  Along with other services, DRMP also conducted Midblock Pedestrian Crossing and Speed studies that led to the overall safety improvements of the road.
