DRMP WINS APWA BIG BEND CHAPTER BEAUTIFICATION PROJECT OF THE YEAR

Tallahassee, Fla. – The Magnolia Multi-Trail Phase project won the American Public Works Association (APWA) Big Bend Chapter’s Beautification Project of the Year. The multi-use trail, located as the gateway of Florida A&M University and downtown Tallahassee, Fla., is part of an overall, six-phase redevelopment efforts to improve safety along the corridor and create a sense of connectivity and community. The multi-use trail is a vast improvement from the 5-foot wide sidewalks that were there with no sidewalks in southside Tallahassee, Fla., poor roadway asphalt conditions and very little landscaping.

Members of the community, representing several area neighborhoods, made their desire for a trail along the corridor known to local government. Generally, residents were seeking a pedestrian/bike facility that would provide inter-neighborhood and community connectivity as well as a safe route to nearby schools, work and shopping.

Along with input from local residents, the success of the project also depended on the close coordination of multiple agencies and stakeholders, both private and public, including the Florida Department of Transportation, CRTPA, LC, COT, BPIA, BBC and businesses.  Working carefully with the local land development code and Downtown Overlay Regulating Plan and the Multimodal Transportation District the trail serves all users, including pedestrians, cyclists, motorists, public transportation and meets the goals of instituting a “sense of place”.
