“My family is really important to me. DRMP values that and allows me a great work/life balance that allows me to spend valuable time with my loved ones.”
What inspired you to choose your career path?
Growing up in Ohio, I spent a lot of time outdoors, hunting, fishing, hiking and playing sports. I definitely enjoyed being outside. I also spent a lot of time working at my neighbor’s auto body shop. I think I started helping, and got paid, when I was about 13. So, all through junior and senior high school I worked on cars and I thought I would become a mechanic. After graduation my girlfriend (my wife now) started taking classes at the local state college, so naturally I joined her. It was there that I found civil engineering. My plans were to get my associates in civil engineering and then transfer to the local university and finish out a bachelor’s degree and become an engineer. I did manage to get both degrees, however, somewhere along the line, one of my instructors, a surveyor, directed me to a company that was hiring people to start a surveying division, and so the journey began. Instrument Man, Crew Chief, Survey Supervisor, 26 years later, and here I am. So, what inspired me to choose my career path, I’m not sure, but I think it may have chosen me.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
The most enjoyable aspect of my job is the satisfaction I get when I finish a project. While I enjoy the opportunity to work on many different types of projects and really like starting a new one. I think the best feeling is finishing the job.
What are you most passionate about?
It’s hard to pick one thing that I am most passionate about. I like to travel with my family, do projects around the house, play softball and coach my daughter’s softball team, but if I must pick one, I think it would be coaching my daughter’s softball team. It is very rewarding to pass along skills and lessons that a coach taught me when I was the kid on the field. It’s nice to see the girls put those skills to use and be successful as a team and to see how each one of them improve throughout the season.
What is your greatest challenge?
I think my greatest challenge has been raising my kids. I have always heard that the older you get the faster time goes by; how true it is. I can’t believe I have a kid getting ready to go off to college and my baby going to high school. It was just yesterday when we were listening to that dumb purple dinosaur singing his songs. Yep, raising kids has definitely been my greatest challenge. I now know why my mom and dad have gray hair.
Name an important "lessons learned" moment you have experienced.
I guess the lesson learned is that life is short and it can change in a second. Our community recently went through a tragedy when a truly great man was killed in an accident while working in his yard. He was the kind of person that would do anything for anyone, no matter what. So as we all go forward in life, remember to be a good friend, a good neighbor and leave a positive mark on the people you touch. We all want to be remembered, so make sure they’re good memories. You never know when your time is up; mend those bridges so there are no regrets.
