What inspired you to choose your career path?
I have always liked to design things. I had always planned on being an engineer in school. I got sidetracked with my after-school job working on golf courses, which led me into the field of constructing golf courses. That position required me to perform a lot of coordination for the owners of the properties. One day, I realized that a lot of what I was doing on a daily basis was essentially engineering. So after finishing the last golf course project I was assigned to, I went back to school to add an engineering degree to my resume.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
Driving down a road that I helped design after it is opened to motorists and seeing how the final plans were built by the contractor.
What are you most passionate about?
I am sure everyone that knows me can answer that my passion is golf. It is always nice to play a golf course for the first time to see if you can play your best with the unknown challenge. One of my best memories was playing the 18th at Pebble Beach with the sun setting over the ocean.
What is your greatest challenge?
At work, my greatest challenge is keeping up with the changing standards. There are a lot of standards and not every project you are working on requires the same ones so you aren’t always focusing on each one on a regular basis. Each time you work on a project it takes time to review the changes and get the plans updated.
Name an important "lessons learned" moment you have experienced.
Do not be afraid to ask or speak up. When I was working in Greenville, SC, we were getting gravity flow sewer lines inspected and I noticed one of the numbers written down by the inspector was not correct. I pointed it out to the inspector and we decided to have the surveyor double-check the number. If I hadn’t spoken up the number would not have been corrected and we would have had to start the inspection over at a later date costing time and money in the long run.
