I-40/I-77 Interchange Improvements

The I-40/I-77 Interchange improvements project is a $89.1 million project located in Statesville, North Carolina. The NCDOT Division 12 needed a private engineering firm to supply Construction Engineering Inspection (CEI) services of this large-scale project.

DRMP provided CEI services for improvements to the I-40/I-77 interchange, which incorporates a new design concept with the construction of a Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI). Operations inspected included 806,500-CY of unclassified excavation, 32,020-LF of storm drainage, 447 rainage structures, 188,900 tons of asphalt and 89,785-SY of concrete paving. Structure construction included 10 bridge sites, 2,008-CY of Class A concrete, 7,814-LF of prestressed girders, 2,653,000-LB of structural steel and approximately 22,000-LF of H-piles.

DRMP’s CEI services assured NCDOT Division 12 that the project was completed in accordance with all project plans and specifications. The DDI design of this interchange will allow for US 21 traffic to flow freely with the elimination of conflicting left turn movements, which further eliminates conflicts and congestion by requiring traffic to cross over on the opposite side and allow free movements on and off of ramps, while the construction of a median island will prevent left turn conflicts.
