Legacy Trail Pedestrian Bridge over US 41

The Legacy Trail Pedestrian Bridge over US 41 was a $2.93 million project in Venice, Florida. The Florida Department of Transportation District One needed a Construction Engineering Inspection team to oversee the administration of the project.

DRMP performed the CEI services for the improvements, which consisted of constructing a pedestrian bridge overpass over a 6-lane section of US 41 (Tamiami Trail) in Venice, Florida. This 574-foot, 7-span structure included five intermediate cast-in-place pier bents on driven 18-inch piling foundations. The bridge has 54-inch precast U-Beams and a cast-in-place deck wearing surfacing. Additional improvements included bridge approaches with MSE walls, stormwater pipe drainage and structures, grading, base, asphalt paving and erosion control features due to the close proximity of the environmentally sensitive wetlands. This trail improvement project was funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009 and includes federal reporting requirements for the number of jobs created and retained.

The improvements are viewed by Sarasota County and the City of Venice as a significant feature that will provide direct access for trail users to each side of US 41. The new bridge structure will greatly improve pedestrian safety along Legacy Trail by providing walkers, runners, bicyclists and other multi-use trail users a way to cross the 6-lane section of US 41 and avoid traffic.
