SR 589 (Suncoast Parkway 2), Segment 1

The SR 589 (Suncoast Parkway 2), Segment 1 section is a $135 million project in Hernando and Citrus counties, Florida. This new 4-lane All Electronic Toll (AET) facility will continue the limited access highway from the current Suncoast Parkway ending at US Highway 98 up to SR 44. SR 589 is the only limited access highway lining the west coast of Florida and requires expansion for future accessibility accommodations to the northwestern corridor of Tampa, Florida.

DRMP was responsible for the Bridge Development Reports (BDR), structural calculations and plans production for five sites along SR 589 and one pedestrian bridge site over US 98, all using Florida I-Beams. Three of the sites (US 98, CR 480 and West Glen Street) consist of twin overpass structures along SR 589. West Cardinal Street consists of a 2-span structure over SR 589 with aesthetic piers. The final site consists of twin bridges over a Wildlife Crossing. The design includes full interchanges at US 98 and West Cardinal Street.  All sites include the design of MSE retaining walls.

SR 589 will provide more convenient access to the northwestern corridor of Tampa. This extension of Suncoast Parkway will open up opportunity for additional expansion along Florida’s west coast north of Tampa. The highway extension will provide more toll revenue for Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise to fund future improvement projects. All structures were engineered using innovative methodologies to provide maximum structure life.
