Hanley Road Safety Improvements

Hillsborough County, Florida selected DRMP to assist them with the number one safety project in the County as identified by the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO).  DRMP was responsible for this high priority safety project that improved pedestrian, bicyclist and motorist safety on Hanley Road. The limits of this project were from Hillsborough Avenue to Waters Avenue, approximately 2-miles in length.

The improvements consisted of constructing raised medians and concrete traffic separators at intersections from Hillsborough Avenue to Fountain Avenue. This project also included the implementation of shared lane markings (sharrows) along the outside lanes on both sides of the road, and crosswalk upgrades at intersections to meet ADA standards throughout the project limits. In order to implement the sharrows, the posted speed limit was reduced from 40 mph to 35 mph. DRMP also conducted a Midblock Pedestrian Crossing Study to determine if any new midblock crossings were warranted. Public involvement included meeting with two schools leading a public meeting.

Sharrows had never been implemented in Hillsborough County’s history and DRMP was proud to pioneer this innovative safety implementation.  The raised medians have reduced head-on crashes and provided pedestrian refuge.
