Park Road/Johnston Road ITS Traffic Signal System

The City of Charlotte, North Carolina sought to improve traffic flow efficiency for Park Road/Johnston Road from Community House Road to Charlottetowne Avenue for approximately 11-miles, including 30 signalized intersections. Most traffic signals are on a timed sequence based on the time of day, and the City of Charlotte sought to implement a more advanced system that could monitor traffic and adapt.

DRMP provided professional engineering services for the design of upgrades and expansion of a fiber optic traffic signal system (ITS).  The improvements include provisions for a 96-pair communication fiber and 15 CCTV cameras.  DRMP’s scope of services included developing fiber optic design plans, splice details, special provisions and engineer’s estimate of probable construction cost (preliminary and final), CCTV camera design, utility make-ready plans, preparing construction documents for implementation, coordinating utility make-ready work, reviewing contractor submittals and assisting with construction administration/inspection during construction.

The new traffic signal system incorporates Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) technologies that greatly improve the efficiency of the transportation network.
