SR 408 Widening (Contract 253C)

The Central Florida Expressway Authority (CFX) in Orange County, Florida sought a firm to provide transportation design services for this $126 million project. SR 408, a critical expressway facility in the area needed major reconstruction from Conway Road to Oxalis Drive.

DRMP’s transportation team provided roadway design professional engineering services for this project which included widening of SR 408 from 6 to 8-travel lanes, the project included auxiliary lanes, replacement of the existing PCC pavement with asphalt pavement, and modifications to the SR 436 Interchange.  This 2-mile project converted an existing mainline barrier toll plaza to an open road toll system, with split change-lane plazas from Conway Road to Oxalis Drive.  Critical elements of the project included demolition of the existing mainline toll plaza and the reconstruction of the new open road tolling split toll plaza. This project required a well-designed traffic control plan to maintain over 100,000 customers during the weekday peak. Additional travel and auxiliary lanes were added to the expressway with improvements to the SR 436 interchange. The existing Lake Underhill braided ramp was relocated to the west along Lake Underhill Road requiring a new ramp bridge with a straddle bent. SR 408 bridges were widened over side roads at Andes, Mercado, Yucatan and Oxalis.

The widening from 6-lanes to 8-travel lanes increased maximum capacity on the limited access roadway relieving driver frustration and improving traffic flow.
