SR 997 (Krome Avenue)

SR 997 (Krome Avenue) was a project designed by DRMP for FDOT District Six in Miami-Dade County, Florida. This segment of Krome Avenue is a truck route within the City of Homestead, Florida. The previous Krome Avenue was too narrow for large trucks to safely travel without affecting the on-street parking, downtown business, and pedestrian/bicycling activities. Adjacent to the travel lanes are historic designated Palm Trees which restricted flexible design options and storm drainage solutions.

DRMP was responsible for the design for this 3R project to reconfigure the typical section from 1-lane to 2-lanes in each direction. The project involved intersection improvements at Kings Highway to provide sufficient turn-lane lengths and turning radii to accommodate the new lane configuration approximately 1-mile in length.  Project limits are from north of SW 321st/Campbell Drive to south of SW 296th Street/Avocado Street (truck bypass).  Innovative drainage designs including curb line elevation modifications were applied to facilitate placement of drainage inlets to prevent impact to the existing palm trees. Bike lane continuity was coordinated with the City of Homestead to reroute bike lanes to a local street within the length of the project.

DRMP’s proposed design provided additional travel lanes and widened existing lanes without widening the roadway itself. This design allows for large trucks to travel on the road and gives other motorists opportunities to pass, without affecting nearby palm trees and pedestrians. The project made Krome Avenue a safer roadway for the community’s residents and businesses.
