Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE)
At DRMP Since:
“I’m an outdoors guy and I love that I’m working out in the field and taking on different challenges from one day to the next.”
What inspired you to choose your career path?
When I joined the Air Force after high school I was interested in a career in Information Technology/Information Systems, but after four years in a secured computer operations center with no windows I realized that it wasn’t for me. Ever since I can remember I have always had a great appreciation for history, maps and navigation; surveying was an opportunity to explore these interests and use my computer skills too. It’s been a perfect fit for me since then.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
My job allows me to work outside and inside to solve different puzzles day to day in constantly changing environments and technologies, nothing could be better.
What are you most passionate about?
I love being able to look at a finished product with my team knowing that we did our best and succeeded in providing a valuable service to our client or other team members. In my personal life nothing comes before my children and my wife. I also love riding bicycles with our three sons and going camping. We are into BMX racing and trail riding on our mountain bikes, there are so many places to explore!
What is your greatest challenge?
We strive every day to improve our product, while balancing budgets and schedules. Saving time for my family can be the greatest challenge, but it gives the greatest rewards.
Name an important "lessons learned" moment you have experienced.
Sometimes just when I think that I have it all figured out, I am so sure of what I know that it’s possible for me to look right over the answer to my question without even seeing it. In mapping utilities you must constantly re-evaluate your perspective. Variables change quickly from one area to the next, what worked yesterday may not work today. This happens in life too—perspectives change, people change, it’s always important to re-evaluate your life.
