What inspired you to choose your career path?
Since I was a young boy, I had dreams of being in space (hence I am an avid Trekker). Later in college, I became fascinated with water and fluid dynamics. I had a professor that taught many applications to sailing which also interested me. Finally, an excellent co-op experience with the city of Tampa sealed the deal and I knew for sure that I wanted to be a civil engineer.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I enjoy the people, many of whom I have worked with for over 15 years. I also enjoy the variety of projects that I get to work on from complex stormwater modeling to transportation safety projects, both of which improve the quality of life of people.
What are you most passionate about?
A great man once said his priorities were “Faith, Family, and Football”. I feel similar!
What is your greatest challenge?
My greatest challenge is maintaining the priorities I have established in life. With the pressures of work deadlines and goals it’s not always easy. It’s kind of like juggling glass balls, some you can afford to drop and break, but some are irreparable. Learning how and when to say “no” is key to keeping our eyes on the most important goals in life.
Name an important "lessons learned" moment you have experienced.
There have been so many it’s hard to decide which to tell… I will suggest two: You can’t please everybody; and learn one design discipline well before aiming for management.
