A. Max Brewer Bridge Replacement
The A. Max Brewer Bridge was a $45 million design-build project located within the City of Titusville, and Brevard County just east of US 1 along SR 406. This massive project involved the replacement of an existing low-level steel swing-span bridge (Bridge No. 704049) and south relief bridge (Bridge No. 704125), both constructed in the 1940s. The original bridge was in poor mechanical condition and prone to breakdowns during normal operation, frequently delaying commuters and tourists during peak traffic times. The breakdowns also prohibited large vessels from continuing along the Intracoastal Waterway. The maturing structure was beginning to deteriorate over time, giving FDOT District Five an urgent challenge to be resolved.
DRMP implemented a single continuous 3,207-foot, high-level fixed bridge, which included a 3-span continuous superstructure unit providing 65-feet of vertical clearance. Our design eliminated impacts to the mangroves, the need for 450-feet of sheet pile wall, rip-rap protection and the life cycle costs of pavement resurfacing. We used 36-inch square precast concrete pilings to increase resistance to ship impact, minimize environmental impacts, and allow for longer pile lengths. DRMP worked in partnership with the fabricator, contractor, and FDOT to meet all regulations, needs and concerns for using the custom pilings. The coastal bridge featured innovative application with a scenic overlook at the high point of the bridge that is located outside of channel limits for safety and economics. The design used deflection stressing blocks for post-tensioning, which required special approval from the Florida Structures Design Office for its unprecedented methodology.
Our solution was able to improve traffic flow efficiency, and ensure a pioneering and safe design for maximum structure life. This groundbreaking structure was not only a connection to the coast, but also a community attraction. The design featured improvements to an already popular fishing location by increasing the area of the fishing pier using concrete to prevent defects and provide low maintenance. The pier is distinguished for its innovative ADA compliant railing which is safe for children and accommodating to those in wheelchairs looking to reel one in. The bridge has always been a popular destination to watch rocket launches. Additional parking was provided for the surrounding attractions due to the space-conscious design. DRMP was able to complete this design-build project under budget and with a schedule that was drastically reduced from the allotted time due largely to effective communication and employment of innovative ideas. Most importantly, the new A. Max Brewer bridge provides an aesthetically pleasing view of the surrounding community’s beauty and attractions.
