Monroe Bypass/Connector Design-Build

The North Carolina Turnpike Authority sought the most advanced and up-to-date Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) technology for the new location Monroe Bypass/Connector Design-Build project.

DRMP provided professional engineering services for ITS and signage for this project. DRMP’s responsibility was from US 601 to the western terminus at US 74. The ITS scope on this approximately 20-mile new location roadway included multiple DMS, RWIS, MVDS, and CCTV devices. The design provided 100% video coverage of the Monroe Bypass corridor, shoulders and ramps as per minimum requirements of the RFP.  The complete conduit system is designed to service all ITS devices and toll facilities.  Two fiber-optic cables were installed in the conduit system, one for ITS equipment and the other for tolls equipment. Fiber-optic splice/termination centers for both the tolls and ITS systems were designed, furnished and installed.  All communications between proposed ITS field devices and the local hub are Ethernet over single-mode fiber-optic cable.

The 100 percent video coverage provides optimal traffic monitoring ability. The video feed can be used to monitor the corridor for incidents and congestion. This information can then be relayed to drivers via Dynamic Message Signs.
