Lakeland, Fla. – DRMP is proud to announce that Brian Crowl, PE, graduated from the 2021 Florida Engineering Leadership Institute (FELI) class. The 10-month program provided professional development, networking and community service opportunities related to the engineering industry and consisted of five sessions held in different cities around the state of Florida from November 2020 to August 2021.
“Every past graduate of the FELI program I’ve talked with only had positive things to say about the program,” Crowl said. “A few said it had been a life and career changing experience for them. How could you not be interested in joining the program after hearing that?”
Crowl experienced many benefits from participating in the program. The lessons he learned and relationships he built over the course of the year will be invaluable moving forward in his career.
“The hardest part was getting the class project off the ground. For the most part we were all strangers having to come up with the project we wanted to do, as well as figure out how we would raise money to fund it,” Crowl said. “Neither of those tasks was easy and it wasn’t until the third session where our class became organized and started making progress.”
Another skill Crowl learned was how to be a leader in his community.
“Being successful in your job is important, but it’s just as important to put forth effort in being successful in your personal relationships and bettering your community,” Crowl said.
The class project Crowl and his class mates chose to work on is the construction of public Wi-Fi hot spot towers in underprivileged communities around Florida. To date, Crowl and his class have been successful at raising over $42,000 toward their cause.
“With the onset of COVID-19, many children have been forced to adopt distance learning where access to a reliable internet connection is essential,” Crowl said. “Our goal is to reduce the widening gap in the education level between students with and without access to technology.”
