ORLANDO, Fla. – DRMP’s and Dewberry’s Suncoast Parkway 2 from US 98 from State Road 44 project is award-winning once again. The roadway design project, which spans Hernando and Citrus counties in Florida, took home the 2023 American Public Works Association (APWA) Florida’s Transportation of the Year. The award celebrates an exceptional transportation project in the state of Florida. DRMP and Dewberry served as lead designers for Phases 1 and 2 of the Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise project, respectively. This is the third recognition for the project that also received Florida Transportation Builders Association’s 2022 Rural Project of the Year and the 2022 Yearbook of Engineering Achievement Award from Zweig Group’s Civil + Structural Engineering Media.
The $135 million new alignment project included the design of 13 miles of a 4-lane Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) facility that increased capacity to ease traffic congestion, improved safety, added interchanges for access, and included several wildlife crossings for the safe passage of migratory animals, and a multi-use trail for public recreation. The phased project includes 15 bridges and three new interchanges, all of which improved accessibility, and capacity, and provided mobility for a good portion of northern Hernando and southern Citrus counties, ultimately creating regional connectivity in West Florida.
The project was rewarding in multiple ways, said DRMP Transportation Director Amanda Woods, PE.
“The Suncoast Parkway 2 project was a great opportunity to design a brand-new alignment for Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise that not only makes commuting more efficient but supports economic growth in the region," said Woods who served as the Structures Engineer of Record for the project. “It’s a great win for the citizens of Hernando and Citrus counties and our team of consultants, government entities, and agencies that worked together to make this happen.”
