DRMP Staff Provide Impactful Hands-On STEM Education in our Communities

June 1st, 2023

Giving back to our communities, whether it’s through charitable donation drives or volunteering our time to share our knowledge and expertise, is at the heart of the DRMPCares program.

Many of DRMP’s professionals are volunteering in our area schools or at annual Construction Career Days (CCD) to teach students about important professions in the A/E/C industry and how they shape our communities.

DRMP Survey staff, including Geospatial Services Department Manager Brent Bass, PE, SIT, Project Manager Bryant King, CST 1, Senior Project Manager Bobby Paulk, PSM, and Survey Analyst Mary Voor have been proactive in providing interactive, hands-on presentations using DRMP’s Augmented Reality (AR) Sand Table during STEM Family Nights and Career Days at various schools throughout the Orlando, Fla., region, giving students the opportunity to interact with the sand table and learn about topography and contouring on a map.

Senior Project Manager Bobby Paulk, PSM, interacts with students exploring DRMP's AR Sand Table during a Florida Engineering Society (FES) Central Florida Chapter Teach-In event at Stenstrom Elementary School in Oviedo, Fla.

The sand table is a 3D, interactive educational tool that allows users to create topography models by shaping real sand, which is then augmented in real-time by an elevation color map, topographic contour lines, and simulated water.  The investment in the sand table has proven to be a fun and engaging activity for students learning about surveying.

Survey Analyst Melissa Padilla Cintron, SIT, a brand ambassador for Get Kids into Survey, a global initiative to inspire future surveyors, uses the organization’s comic books and posters, as well as technology to teach students about the profession through stimulating school presentations and learning labs at CCD events and the Great American Teach-In.

DRMP Chief Operating Officer Mike Albano, PE, has been a fan favorite for years dedicating his time at CCD events all over Florida to lead learning labs that introduce students to a wide range of opportunities in the engineering industry.

CEI Inspector Whitney Arrington, Traffic Engineer Deston Taylor, EI, and Roadway Engineer Tyler Smith, EI, recently gave a civil engineering presentation at Flomaton High School in Flomaton, Ala., where all three attended school together. During the presentation, students constructed a crane out of simple materials, such as cups, baby pins, and string to teach students how the center of gravity and counterweights are used to design a simple load-bearing structure.

These are just a handful of an even greater number of DRMP professionals companywide volunteering their time and talents to provide meaningful and impactful STEM education through our DRMPCares program. Our employees are the DRMP Difference.
