I-95 Widening from the Indian River/Brevard County Line to Malabar Road

The I-95 Widening from the Indian River/Brevard County Line to Malabar Road was a $51 million design-build project located in Brevard County, Florida. Florida’s many attractions and vacation destinations are constantly growing in popularity and demand, and I-95 has always been the major corridor that connects Florida’s east coast to the rest of the eastern United States. The increasing popularity fostered vehicular congestion on this stretch of thoroughfare through Brevard County and needed to be addressed.

The limited-access highway project called for DRMP's design to include median widening from 4-lanes to 6-lanes for 12.4-miles, the complete replacement of four insufficient bridges (two bridges at Fellsmere Canal and two at C-54 Canal) and the widening of two bridges at Sottile Canal. DRMP also provided drainage design services that included ponds and special ditches, drainage structures and extending box culverts. A detailed maintenance of traffic (MOT) plan was designed for the new bridges, widening areas and for the lengths of complete reconstruction of I-95. The Design-Build included signing and pavement marking and adding an extensive ITS system.

The 12.4-miles of DRMP-designed median widening provided Brevard and Indian River counties with a more efficient traffic flow for all motorists on I-95.

This roadway segment was part of an overall plan to provide 6-lanes on I-95 through FDOT District Five. DRMP was able to accomplish both of these goals in a single project. All bridge replacements were designed for maximum structure life, minimizing upkeep and maintenance costs. DRMP Water Resources applied innovative stormwater strategies for effective highway drainage.
