Pollard Road Extension over Peace Creek

The Pollard Road Extension over Peace Creek is a $15 million design-build project located in the City of Winter Haven, Florida. The CSX Intermodal Terminal, once operated in Orlando, Florida, made plans to move their operations to Winter Haven, Florida. This new terminal, operated by Evansville Western Railway (EVWR), offered Winter Haven an opportunity for dozens of jobs and economic benefits. The biggest challenge was that the city had no access to the site, which was necessary to begin the $60 million terminal construction.

As a result of location restrictions, DRMP designed a 1.8-mile extension of Pollard Road with a bridge over Peace Creek. This project was delivered on an accelerated schedule as it was needed for site access during construction of the intermodal facility. The Pollard Road Extension provided the only access to the CSX Winter Haven Intermodal Center.  The 215-foot long bridge is composed of cast-in-place flat slabs founded on driven concrete piles.  Over 1,300-feet of retaining wall was used at the approaches to minimize right-of-way requirements.

The Pollard Road Extension over Peace Creek design-build project assisted in the efficient construction of the Winter Haven Intermodal Center. Due to DRMP’s quick design, construction was streamlined and provided the facility with a means to continue to positively impact the economy of the Winter Haven area. Since construction, the Pollard Road Extension is used as a thoroughfare to transfer freight from the Intermodal facility to the surrounding areas.
