Lovers Key Park Restoration

DRMP provided Mobile LiDAR and Surveying services for the Florida Department of Environmental Protection on an accelerated schedule to support the restoration of Lovers Key Park in Fort Myers Beach, Fla., after it was severely damaged by Hurricane Ian. The park, a treasured spot for both residents and tourists, needed precise data to guide the restoration process. DRMP used Mobile LiDAR alongside traditional surveying methods to gather the necessary data quickly and accurately.

Mobile LiDAR played a key role in capturing detailed topographic data across the park. Using a RIEGL VMX-2HA TML sensor, the team gathered 2 million data points per second. This high-accuracy survey, compliant with FDOT’s terrestrial Mobile LiDAR surveying and mapping guidelines, minimized the need for on-site visits, enhancing safety and reducing project timeframes. The Mobile LiDAR data was combined with terrestrial static LiDAR scanning, unmanned aerial vehicle scanning, and bathymetric survey to create a complete and accurate map of the park’s terrain. DRMP delivered a signed and sealed topographic survey, an AutoCAD file with utility and bathymetric data, and registered color point clouds as part of the project deliverables.

In addition to topographic data, DRMP provided Subsurface Utility engineering (SUE) services. These included Quality Level B utility designations to locate and map underground utilities, as well as mapping geotechnical boring locations. All work followed the State of Florida standards of practice for surveying and mapping, complied with ASCE C-1 38-22 guidelines, and met the requirements of the Florida underground facility damage prevention and safety act, using quality levels B, C, and D.
