W. Mallard Creek Church Road Shared Use Path

The City of Charlotte, North Carolina needed a firm to provide professional engineering services for the design of a shared use path along W. Mallard Creek Church Road.  Mallard Creek Road is a thoroughfare in the historic Derita community of Charlotte and adding a multi-use sidewalk would increase the safety of pedestrians on the roadway.

DRMP provided design services for this 2,900-LF shared use sidewalk that links multi-family and single family residential land uses with commercial retail land uses at the western end of the project.  As Mallard Creek Road is a state road, NCDOT coordination and encroachment permits were required.  The project included pedestrian refuge islands in the median of Mallard Creek Road, integration and construction of bus transit shelters, ADA improvements, access management improvements and a concrete island at a commercial driveway location that offers pedestrian refuge as well as restricting left turns.

The shared use sidewalk path creates separation from pedestrians and motorists, creating a safer commute for all of those in the community. The path features signing and markings that keep both pedestrians and drivers more informed and aware of their surroundings. Traffic patterns were altered as needed to create a less accident-prone environment.
