SR 408 Widening (Contract No. 408-128)

Central Florida Expressway Authority (CFX) sought a consultant to provide Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) design for a 4-mile widening and resurfacing project on the limited access roadway SR 408. The project required mitigation of ITS conflicts to maintain continuous operation of the system throughout construction.

DRMP was responsible for the design of 4-miles of widening and the ITS components of this project. ITS design and plans included the addition of a new gigabit fiber network with supporting ITS devices (wrong-way driving detection, Mainline and arterial dynamic message signs (DMS), closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras, data collection sensors and traffic monitoring sites) and tolling communications. Also included was a temporary fiber communications system design to maintain end to end connectivity and device uptime during construction.

The new ITS system allows for advanced communication of traffic monitoring and critical information messages. The Traffic Management Center (TMC) controlled by CFX can gather information and quickly disperse it along this 4-mile stretch of SR 408. This real-time traffic management system will keep motorists more informed and provide a more reliable commute.
