DRMP’s Alia Awwad to Present MOVE TAMARAC at 2026 Safe Roads Summit

February 23rd, 2026

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – As the City of Tamarac prepares for significant population growth – up to a 20 percent increase over the next two decades – city planners are taking steps to ensure streets are safer, more accessible, and better connected for drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, and transit riders.

DRMP Planning Group Leader Alia Awwad, PE, will present the MOVE TAMARAC Multimodal Transportation Connectivity Master Plan alongside Tamarac’s Community Development Assistant Director Maher Mansour, AICP, LEED AP ND, at the 2026 Safe Roads Summit on Feb. 25–26 at the Broward County Convention Center.

The summit brings together transportation professionals, planners, engineers, and public officials to explore innovative approaches to roadway safety and mobility. More than 500 people have registered to attend the event, which includes a variety of technical sessions and mobile workshops focused on promoting and advancing safer roads in the Tri-County area (Broward, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach counties).

Awwad and Mansour will be speaking on a panel titled “Infrastructure Capital Planning and Implementation” with other panelists during the session. Their session will explore how data-driven analysis, public engagement, and innovative planning and programming strategies fuel a proactive approach to multimodal transportation. The session is designed for local government officials, city staff, regional planning agencies, organizations, departments of transportation, and and urban planning professionals seeking practical strategies to improve mobility, safety, and connectivity in suburban environments.

“The success of MOVE TAMARAC depends on collaboration,” Awwad said. “We adopted a data-driven approach, listened to the community, and directly integrated their feedback into our recommendations. We also applied a sensitivity analysis to regional priorities and project readiness to develop a feasible, implementable set of projects and policies.”

For MOVE TAMARAC, robust data collection and analysis, community feedback, and regional priorities were coalesced to create a transportation network that incorporates age-friendly design elements to support aging in place and a growing suburban population.

The presentation will highlight projects that advance these goals, including corridor improvements to reduce traffic injuries and improve safety and access for all road users.

The presentation will highlight Tamarac’s commitment to building an age-friendly community aligned with the AARP Livable Communities network and the Blue Zones Project. These initiatives promote safe, accessible environments for residents of all ages, particularly older adults. The master plan advances these goals through safer crossings, expanded and shaded sidewalks, traffic-calming measures, improved transit access, and better connections to parks and community amenities, which support healthier, more active lifestyles and stronger social connections.

Additionally, the City is pursuing grants that will help accelerate the implementation of these safer facilities. Attendees will also learn how Tamarac is aligning with regional goals and efforts to maximize the potential of implementing the MOVE TAMARAC master plan.

Moving toward implementation, the City is integrating policy into its comprehensive governing framework, working closely with agency partners and leveraging funding opportunities.

“I am hoping attendees will walk away with an empowered sense of translating transportation mobility plans into actionable, implementable strategies and projects,” Awwad said.
