DRMP Provided CEI Services for Award-Winning Stormwater Project

December 18th, 2020

Orlando, Fla. –  DRMP is pleased to announce that the Hudson Bayou In-Stream Restoration and Water Quality Improvement project in Sarasota County, Fla. won the Florida Stormwater Association’s (FSA) 2020 Excellence Award.

DRMP provided construction engineering inspection (CEI) services for the project that improved water quality in the Hudson Bayou by successfully treating stormwater runoff that was flowing into the bayou, and ultimately the Sarasota Bay. DRMP Project Manager Brian Crowl, PE, and CEI Inspector Breonnia Pittman worked with Sarasota County staff, the Engineer of Record and Contractor to make sure this 231-day project with multiple agency involvement and stakeholders was completed on time and within the budget. Major components of the project included an enhanced drainage system and construction of a bioswale system. Environmental factors were also considered by rerouting restoration efforts around existing trees and installing native Florida plants.

The FSA Excellence Award recognizes “outstanding commitment to stormwater management practices providing benefits to the environment and local citizenry”.

About the Award-Winning Project

DRMP provided CEI services for this stormwater project. Stormwater runoff full of nutrients and sediment in the coastal community of Sarasota County, Fla. was flowing into a local ditch canal system, which flows into Hudson Bayou that empties into the Sarasota Bay. To eliminate direct discharge into the bayou, an improved draining system and a bioswale treatment system were constructed to collect the first 0.5-inch of runoff. Exotic vegetation in the area was also removed and replaced with native Florida plants to help filter pollutants and provide habitat. Other components of the project included slope restoration and upland planting, tree island preservations, dredging of existing sediment sump, installation of skimmer structures, and the creation of a natural buffer area along the shoreline. The project also serves as an educational resource for nearby Sarasota High School students to learn about watershed and environment management.
