DRMP Joins Lee County Officials at Ribbon Cutting Ceremony to Celebrate Rosa Parks Transportation Center Renovation

August 31st, 2022

Lee County, Fla. – DRMP and Lee County officials recently gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to commemorate LeeTran’s freshly renovated Rosa Parks Transportation Center.

DRMP provided Construction Engineering and Inspection (CEI) services and owner representation for the project located at 2250 Widman Way in Fort Myers.

“This project is the flagship of transit in our county, in our community,” LeeTran Director Robert Codie said during the ceremony held at the Rosa Parks Transportation Center. “It’s centrally located. It’s accessible. It’s safe, and it provides transportation to all corridors of our community.”

The County expanded the bus terminal to meet the demand of its growing population and the extra passengers who will be using the facility. An estimated 1,100 passengers use the terminal daily.

“They say that in the last year, basically since the pandemic started in April of 2020, we saw more than 27,000 new residents move to Lee County and make it their permanent home,” Lee County Commissioner Brian Hammond said during the ceremony. “That’s the equivalent of a small city that moved here.”

Work on the project began in November 2021 and renovations included adding four new bus bays, expanding and remodeling the customer service area, upgrading the restrooms, making Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) improvements, painting the entire exterior, remodeling the break room, and sealing the asphalt.

DRMP provided onsite inspection, managed all the materials testing and represented Lee County in giving approval to any changes to the plans, said DRMP Project Administrator Jamie Khawaja.

“If the contractor wanted to change the plans or do something differently, we were part of the group that would provide concurrence,” Khawaja said.

“It was a rewarding project,” Khawaja added. “I got to take part in a little bit of everything from top to bottom.”

The additional bus bays will create opportunities for the seasonal trolleys in Downtown Fort Myers and provide greater connectivity for families, friends, and employers, officials said.

“Public transportation provides such a benefit to our community, and we are thrilled to have this facility at this location,” City of Fort Myers Mayor Kevin Anderson said at the ceremony. “In the upcoming years, this whole area is going to be transformed, and this will be right in the heart of it.”
