Valencia College West Campus North Roundabout

Valencia College’s West Campus in Orlando, Fla. has several three and four way stops on its campus with the busiest one located at Metro-Center Boulevard and Valencia College Drive.  Campus traffic at this intersection was approximately 800-1,000 cars per mid-day peak hour.  The intersection was operating at a failing operations condition. College security identified that the intersection had approximately seven incidences a week and required a fulltime traffic person at the intersection at peak morning, noon and afternoon times. College operations staff also expressed a need relocate the pervious Lynx bus stop to an area that would be safer for the students to access and with closer proximity to the school buildings.

Under a continuing contract with the college, DRMP was asked to assist the College to explore options on updating the college’s master plan to provide upgrades to the campus’s existing roadway infrastructure system.  Working with Luke Transportation It was determined a roundabout was the most viable solution to increase safety for both traffic and pedestrians. The roundabout was designed to function as driver friendly as possible with high intensity pedestrian flashers and safety speed tables to help reduce the vehicle speeds with in the roundabout. The speed tables double as a pedestrians and cyclists, crosswalks with pedestrian high intensity crossing signals were included in the design.

The new roundabout increased safety for traffic, pedestrians and cyclists on campus and is functioning without the need of a traffic person at the intersection. Traffic is moving through the roundabout with no traffic incidences noted since the opening of the roundabout.
