St. Johns Heritage Parkway Bridge Design

The St. Johns Heritage Parkway bridge design is a multi-million dollar project located in Brevard County, Florida. The project is the result of heavy congestion on Minton Road in the area of Palm Bay and Melbourne, Florida. The County needs a new north-south alternative to reduce the traffic congestion on Minton Road. St. Johns Heritage Parkway will alleviate the challenging traffic and provide another route to access US-192 from the area of Emerson Drive.

The project is divided into two segments: southern and northern, which included a Preliminary Engineering Phase, PD&E reevaluation and Final Design Phase. This project included the design of a bridge which provides a landowner access to farm both portions of his bisected parcel. The bridge is designed to accommodate farm equipment in the near term and a 4-lane urban roadway that will facilitate future development of the property. The 102-foot long, single span bridge, carries two lanes and a side walk and is designed to be expandable to a future 4-lane section.  This project also includes the design of a concrete box culvert at the C-84 Canal and retaining wall to reduce the roadway footprint on a borrow pit. The project involved intensive coordination with outside agencies including; Florida Highway Administration (FHWA), FDOT District Five, City of Palm Bay, St. Johns River Water Management District (SJRWMD), US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) and the Melbourne-Tillman Water Control District.

The St. Johns Heritage Parkway will provide Brevard County motorists a new north-south alternative to the congested Minton Road. This new thoroughfare will include the latest innovations in stormwater designs for exceptional roadway drainage. The addition of the new traffic light at St. Johns Heritage Parkway and US-192 obtains maximum efficiency for a busy intersection by relieving traffic congestion.  The County plans to have the parkway eventually link with I-95 near Grant-Valkaria and Melbourne, Florida to improve vehicular access to the airport.  DRMP’s design of this project provides Brevard County with an advantage when considering future additions and accessibility improvements for the roadway.
