Seminole – Wekiva Trail Underpass

Seminole County, Florida, sought a professional engineering services design firm to design a multi-use trail underpass/tunnel at the SR 434 and Markham Woods intersection.

Bridge design included a trail, a 255-foot cut-and-cover tunnel with lighting, walls, two trailheads, a signalized intersection, decorative signage and landscaping.  The trail passes under the SR 434 roadway at a 55-degree skew to the highway alignment.  Based on the skewed trail alignment, custom skewed precast tunnel components were designed to be consistent with multiple phases of construction.  Tunnel components were designed using finite element modeling to evaluate complex bending effects imposed on the box components as a result of applicable load combinations and the skewed geometry.

The Wekiva Trail is now continuous at the SR 434 and Markham Woods intersection. The underpass doesn’t impede traffic and poses no safety concern for the trail users and motorists.
