Community House Road

DRMP provided planning, design, and construction phase services for this $8.2 million roadway improvement project. The purpose of this project was to improve safety and connectivity while reducing congestion on Community House Road from Bryant Farms Road to Ardrey Kell Road in Charlotte, North Carolina.   The goal was to better serve the community and all roadway users including residents, businesses, motorists, pedestrians, bicyclists, transit users and commuters. Public input was an integral part of this process as an elementary school, a middle school, a high school, and a YMCA exist along the primarily residential 1.5-mile corridor.

DRMP responded quickly to a rapidly changing corridor with a variety of stakeholders, including three schools, a YMCA, NCDOT, and homeowners to achieve consensus and meet City expectations.  Due to the proximity of the schools and context of the surrounding land uses, extensive public involvement was required.  DRMP met individually with Community House Middle School, Morrison YMCA, and multiple HOAs and individual property owners in order to implement effective school stacking plans and school traffic considerations during and after construction, incorporate meandering sidewalks, and other features to mitigate tree and property impacts, coordinate design plans with new private development and implement effective traffic calming features such as roundabouts in the final design.

DRMP completed the planning and design phase utilizing the City’s Urban Street Design Guidelines 6-step planning process throughout the planning phase of the project.  Additionally, much of this corridor is state-maintained requiring coordination, review, and approval of plans for encroachment in NCDOT right-of-way including consensus on utility accommodations.   The project included a multi-lane roundabout at the Bryant Farms Road and Community House Road intersection requiring review and approval by NCDOT.

Operational levels of service have improved on Community House Road while also enhancing the safety of motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians. Added sidewalks ensure safety for the students of the surrounding public schools. Additionally, intersection improvements and turn lane additions have provided higher capacity for more efficient traffic flow.
