State Road 390 from Baldwin Road to Jenks Avenue

Panama City, Fla.’s SR 390 from Baldwin Road to Jenks Avenue, originally a rural two-lane undivided roadway, needed to be widened to support growth in the area. Additionally, Category 5 Hurricane Michael affected the project timeline after causing major damage.

DRMP provided transportation design services to support the reconstruction of the roadway from a rural two-lane undivided arterial to an urban six-lane divided arterial. DRMP’s design team accommodated the existing geometry, including turn lanes and bicycle and pedestrian provisions, while providing room for extensive underground utility relocation and simultaneously constructing portions of the proposed wider roadway.

The project’s traffic control plan required a maintenance of traffic shift to allow for the space required to relocate utilities before the proposed travel lanes could be constructed, allowing for a continuous flow of traffic throughout construction. The increased width of the roadway required that additional right of way be purchased from almost every parcel adjacent to the corridor south of Jenks Avenue.

DRMP supported the extensive collaboration between stakeholders to develop the roadway design, subsurface utility, lighting, and bike/sidewalk design services required to reconstruct this roadway. Ultimately, the roadway was successfully widened to increase capacity for current and future growth. After the area was devastated by Category 5 Hurricane Michael, contractor crews and CEI staff assisted the community with debris clean-up.
