Perdido Key Multi-Use Path Opens in Escambia County, Fla., with DRMP's Expertise
July 31st, 2024
PERDIDO KEY, Fla. – Public officials in Escambia County, Fla., recently celebrated the opening of the Perdido Key Multi-Use Path, a project enhanced by the expertise of DRMP, which provided Construction, Engineering, Inspection (CEI) and Survey services.
“We’re proud to see the Perdido Key Multi-Use Path completed,” said DRMP CEI Area Leader and Senior Project Manager Elizabeth Graham, PE. “This trail is not just about better connectivity. It’s about encouraging a healthier lifestyle and making the community more accessible for everyone. We’re excited to see it completed and look forward to the positive impact it will have on the area.”
This new 6.5-mile recreational trail for walking, jogging, and cycling, extending from the Florida-Alabama state line to the Theo Baars Bridge, offers unprecedented connectivity.
“It’s going to add connectivity in this part of District 1 that we’ve never had before,” said Escambia County Commissioner Jeff Bergosh during a ribbon cutting for the project. “I’m so excited.”
This multi-use path is a key element of Perdido Key’s master plan and aims to enhance tourism and improve walkability in the area. The project encompasses an 8-foot-wide path along the north side of Perdido Key Drive. Additional features include a gravity wall, pedestrian and bicycle railing, benches, landscaping, and thermoplastic striping.
During the ribbon cutting ceremony, Chips Kirschenfeld, Escambia County Natural Resources Management Director, highlighted the collaborative efforts that made the project possible. He said the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service was instrumental in its habitat conservation plan, showing that you can have economic development and environmental protection at the same time.
“You don’t have to choose one or the other,” he said.
