DRMP is Adding an “Alternative” Route to Design-Build Services
May 12th, 2021
The need for sustainable and sound transportation infrastructure continues to grow and with potential federal dollars earmarked for the country’s transportation systems there could be a groundswell of projects to be designed and constructed. In turn, project owners working with DRMP are choosing more innovative, quicker project delivery methods like design-build as their go-to option.
DRMP is looking ahead to answer owners’ desires for more innovation and streamlined processes, resulting in greater value for their projects. DRMP’s Alternative Delivery group is an award-winning Design-Build leader in Florida that has successfully led 15 design-build projects worth $650 million. Our innovative designs on alternative delivery projects has saved over $20 million for our clients. DRMP’s Alternative Delivery group is prepared to answer the call of a growing number of projects across the Southeast by providing design services for Design-Build, Progressive Design-Build (PDB), Design-Build Operate Maintain (DBOM), and Public Private Partnership (P3) projects.
In addition to our design services, DRMP’s Alternative Delivery group provides a myriad of Contractor Services and Specialty Engineering including review of out of tolerance piles, repair procedures, maintenance of traffic modifications, and temporary walls, among many others.
“I am looking forward to expanding our alternative delivery design and specialty engineering services across the Southeast to continue to provide our clients and contractors with cost and time-saving designs,” said DRMP Vice President of Alternative Delivery TJ Lallathin Jr., PE, DBIA.
Building strong relationships with the owner/client, contractor and stakeholders involved is vital to produce more efficient safer transportation systems. DRMP’s Alternative Delivery Design key staff have over 150 years of combined experience, which includes working with various agencies, entities, contractors and owners.
“Relationships are vital in this type of work, especially considering the pace at which these projects run. Many times, there are disagreements, difficult situations and issues that need to be resolved to get the project complete,” Lallathin added. “It is during times like that that determines who you want to work with again in the future as these bring the team closer together.”
To further prepare, DRMP’s Anthony Smith was recently promoted as Alternative Delivery Design Specialist to develop innovative ways to streamline projects to improve safety and efficiency, minimize project impacts and reduce costs. Smith’s design efforts in his previous role as Senior Roadway Designer have been a part of several major transportation projects, including the SR 528/436 Interchange Improvement, SR 538 (Poinciana Parkway) Widening, and the Wekiva Parkway Section 8 Design-Build projects.
Smith said the freedom in design is what drew him to alternative delivery design.
“There’s room for new ideas that improve projects,” Smith added. “I hope to bring a lot of creativity to alternative technical concepts in the projects that we pursue.”
In addition to Smith joining the Alternative Delivery Design team, Lallathin, who originally helped build DRMP’s Design-Build Department, recently earned his Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) certification. It is the design-build industry’s highest designation. To achieve the Design-Build Professional certification the applicant must complete the DBIA’s comprehensive education and certification testing, as well as have two to six years of substantial documented experience in design-build project delivery.
Lallathin said the certification is an added assurance for project owners.
“Having a DBIA certification will ensure project owners that throughout the project, from procurement through final execution, the team will focus on DBIA’s best practices to deliver a successfully executed project,” said Lallathin.
