Elevating Leadership: My Journey with FELI’s Class of 2024

August 13th, 2024 by Pavan Paiavula, PE

When I first considered joining the Florida Engineering Leadership Institute (FELI) program, my primary motivation was to expand my network in leadership by connecting with various professionals across Florida.

As someone in a leadership role, I wanted to explore fresh ideas and gain insights from diverse perspectives. The FELI program, known for transforming engineering professionals into community leaders, seemed like the ideal platform.

I’m proud to announce that after completing the 10-month program, I have graduated from the FELI Class of 2024 alongside my colleague, Florida CEI Leader Ryan Pellerin, PE, CCM.

Reflecting on my experience in the program, I was inspired by FELI’s track record and the ongoing involvement of its alumni, which promised continued connections with industry leaders that could benefit both my professional growth and DRMP’s success.

Initially, my goals with FELI were to hone my leadership skills and engage in community service. The program exceeded my expectations by offering motivational sessions that reshaped my outlook on leadership and service. The experience pushed me to think differently and adapt my goals in meaningful ways.

Memorable and Impactful Moments

A key takeaway from my FELI experience is the importance of community involvement and mentoring. Engaging in community service and guiding young engineers are essential for fostering future leaders and influencers in the field.

One of the most impactful aspects of the program was our class project, which focused on raising funds for a STEM Outreach Solutions program in collaboration with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT). This initiative aims to inspire the next generation of civil engineers by providing STEM training and supplies to teachers in all schools across Florida that are interested in participating.

Alongside this, we dedicated time to serving at food banks, which shed light on the critical issue of food insecurity and how so much food is being wasted. This experience was eye-opening for me and reinforced my commitment to community service, something I plan to continue and encourage among my family and colleagues.

FELI played an important role in developing my leadership skills through various inspirational sessions. A particularly memorable moment was a live session with Navy Captain David Carey. His stories of his struggles, resilience, and perseverance during the Vietnam War provided powerful lessons on overcoming challenges. For those interested, his experiences are captured in this YouTube podcast, which I highly recommend.

Enhancing Networking and Leadership Skills

New engineers today face challenges such as, communication, support, adapting to evolving technology, and building trust and confidence. FELI addresses these challenges by providing proper training, mentoring, and team-building events, helping new engineers to overcome these obstacles effectively. As one of the team-building events, our class participated in a social event aboard the Pirate Cruise in St. Augustine in which we dressed up for the occasion. The event provided a unique setting for both professional connections and social interaction.

Networking has always been a part of my professional life through roles in the American Society of Highway Engineers (ASHE) and the Florida Engineering Society (FES), but FELI took these skills to the next level. The program facilitated connections with numerous leaders across the state, enriching my network and broadening my professional opportunities.

I encourage everyone to stay connected with local engineering societies to strengthen networking and leadership skills, promote your organization's brand, and participate in community service. These connections and experiences are invaluable for personal and professional growth.

My journey with FELI has been enlightening, and I’m excited to continue applying these lessons in my career and community involvement for years to come.
