Expert Traffic Impact Analysis: Solutions Beyond the Numbers
February 26th, 2025
Transportation projects come with their fair share of hurdles, including cost concerns, property impacts, utility conflicts, and scheduling challenges. When it comes to Traffic Impact Analysis (TIA), a one-size-fits-all approach doesn’t work. Our TIA team at DRMP understands that every project has unique challenges, which is why we bring creative, outside-the-box, tailored solutions to the table to help minimize costs and reduce impacts to property owners.
Private
From a TIA perspective, our goal is to identify solutions that not only meet technical requirements but also serve the best interests of our clients. Private clients, in particular, face tighter financial constraints, so we work strategically to minimize their mitigation costs while still satisfying state and local regulations.
Public
Our expertise encompasses a wide range of solutions from traffic modeling to infrastructure designs, including roundabouts, U-turns, and diverging diamond interchanges. DRMP’s TIA team are also experts in school traffic studies and have provided traffic engineering services to hundreds of schools of all types. We look for ways to optimize traffic flow while mitigating negative impacts on surrounding communities.
Advocacy for Our Clients
Beyond technical expertise, what sets DRMP apart is our ability to advocate for our clients. We do more than analyze and report. We also strategize and negotiate. Our deep understanding of state and local regulations allows us to provide strategies that satisfy requirements without unnecessary expenditures.
On the public side, particularly for school traffic counts, our role shifts toward ensuring safe, efficient traffic flow that meets community needs. For instance, we help schools plan for efficient vehicle stacking on campus to minimize congestion and prevent stopped vehicles from parking on surrounding roads.
The Power of Experience and Relationships
Traffic engineering is a field governed by national standards, which allows our team to work across various jurisdictions with ease. However, each project comes with its own nuances, and that’s where our relationships and tailored approach make a difference. We don’t just apply standard solutions. We adapt, innovate, and advocate to deliver the best possible outcomes for our clients.
We are committed to seeing our clients succeed. Whether public or private, our team guides projects through every phase and makes TIAs a tool for progress rather than a roadblock.
Whether working with public agencies or private clients, our team knows the ins and outs of traffic engineering to keep projects moving forward efficiently.
Check out some of our TIA project highlights:
Fredericksburg National Baseball Stadium
Potomac Baseball LLCneeded a TIA on roads leading to a proposed baseball stadium in Fredericksburg, Va. Potomac Baseball was eager to move to a new stadium for a rebrand, so it needed to complete the analysis in a short time frame.
It was quickly determined that no additional work was needed to create a satisfactory traffic flow. Although the development generates high traffic, the development’s traffic typically occurs during off-peak times for commuter traffic.
DRMP’s traffic engineers' recommendations saved Potomac Baseball LLC time and money that they can devote to other parts of operating a minor league baseball team.
Apex Friendship Elementary School
The Wake County Public School System needed a TIA for a proposed new elementary school in Apex, N.C. The elementary school is part of the Apex Friendship school campus that includes a middle school and high school. The traffic study considered traffic flow for the elementary school on campus as well as evaluated traffic operations at several surrounding intersections.
To compensate, DRMP’s traffic engineers recommended multiple design options, including lane widening, signal designing, and directions for traffic flow.
The traffic engineers' recommendations will alleviate congestion for motorists and minimize traffic congestion for surrounding businesses and residents.
Pullen Drive Extension/Catholic Diocese
The Pullen Drive Extension/Catholic Diocese project in Raleigh, N.C., aimed to improve accessibility and circulation within the Diocese campus. A TIA study evaluated a new cathedral and future school, analyzing roadways for necessary improvements. The City of Raleigh's Transportation Plan identified Pullen Road as a future City roadway, prompting alignment studies. DRMP’s traffic engineers coordinated with the City, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT), and North Carolina State University (NCSU), forming a three-party agreement to complete the Pullen Road Extension as part of the Diocese development.
Our engineers designed a two-lane divided roadway with bike lanes, sidewalks, and multi-use paths, connecting Western Boulevard to Centennial Parkway. The project included a roundabout at Pullen Road and Bilyeu Street, storm drainage, signal design, and erosion control. The drainage system featured 2,600 Linear Feet (LF) of pipe and 35 structures. Coordination ensured effective stormwater management with sediment control structures and phased construction. The project greatly improved campus accessibility, traffic flow, and pedestrian mobility while supporting sustainable development in Raleigh.
John Schick, PTP, serves as Traffic Analysis Group Leader for DRMP’s Transportation Market Sector.
Rynal Stephenson, PE, serves as Chief Traffic Analysis Engineer for DRMP’s Transportation Market Sector.
Grady Vaughan, PE, PTOE, PTP, serves as Traffic Analysis Lead for DRMP’s Transportation Market Sector.
