SR 8 (I-10) Intelligent Transportation System (ITS)

SR 8 (I-10) Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) was a $24 million project located in Santa Rosa, Okaloosa, Walton, Holmes, Washington, Jackson, Bay and Gadsden Counties in the panhandle of Florida. The FDOT District Three desired to hire a Construction Engineering Inspection (CEI) firm for this design-build project.

DRMP was selected to provide CEI services for the ITS improvements project. This design-build contract included design, procurement, installation, integration and testing of an ITS system from east of SR 87 to west of SR 10 (US 90) in Florida’s Panhandle. The project provided a fiber optic cable communication distribution facility and other ITS equipment/infrastructure beginning at the Pensacola Freeway Management System terminus located at approximately SR 8 (I-10) mile marker (MM) 33 in Santa Rosa County. The new ITS facility extends eastward to the Tallahassee Freeway Management System terminus located at approximately SR 8 (I-10) MM 190. The ITS facility also included the following sections: 1. SR 75 (US 231) beginning at the terminus of the Bay County Advanced Transportation Management System (ATMS) traffic signal cabinet assembly at CR 2301 and extending to the Alabama State Line. This segment is connected to the SR 8 (I-10) segment. 2. SR 10 (US 90) from SR 75 (US 231) to the FDOT District Three Office Complex in Chipley.  The project encompassed 223 miles of mostly rural roadway and included the installation of 19 Dynamic Message Signs (DMS), 188 Closed Circuit Television Cameras (CCTV), 140 Microwave Vehicle Detection Systems (MVDS), 40 Bluetooth Travel Time Systems (TTS), and eight Highway Advisory Radios (HAR). In addition to the roadway infrastructure, the design-build firm renovated a designated area in the District Three Office Complex to establish a new Transportation Management Center.

This ITS project provided for the collection and dissemination of information to alert drivers of potential road hazards, lane closures and maintains a safe, efficient flow of traffic.
