South Park Area ITS Traffic Signal System Upgrade and Expansion

The City of Charlotte, North Carolina needed a firm to provide transportation design services for this Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) upgrade project. The City sought to improve live traffic monitoring through the use of closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras in order to improve traffic flow along several major corridors and at multiple critical intersections in south Charlotte.

DRMP provided professional engineering services for the design of upgrades and expansion of a fiber-optic traffic signal system.  The project extends along multiple corridors around the South Park Area in south Charlotte for a project distance of nearly 20-miles including 44 signalized intersections.  The proposed improvements include provisions for a combination of 12, 24, 36, and 48 pair communication fiber and 29 CCTV cameras. Work also included modifications to the traffic management center (TMC) to convert the existing CCTV control system from SONET transceivers to Ethernet transmission control.  DRMP’s scope of services included developing fiber-optic design plans, splice details, special provisions and engineer’s estimate of probable construction cost (preliminary and final), CCTV camera design, utility make-ready plans, preparing construction documents for the implementation of the traffic signal system projects, coordinating utility make-ready work, reviewing contractor submittals and assisting with construction administration/inspection during construction.

The new traffic signal system incorporates ITS technologies that greatly improve the efficiency of the transportation network.
