SR 589 (Suncoast Parkway 2), Segment 1

Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise (FTE) sought to add an extensive Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) to improve roadway monitoring and communication along 9-miles of new roadway and interchanges for SR 589 (Suncoast Parkway 2).

DRMP provided professional engineering services for approximately 9-miles of new alignment roadway and the interchanges with US 98 and Cardinal Road.  The overall project is a new limited access all electronic toll (AET) facility to extend the Suncoast Parkway.  DRMP provided traffic design and plans production for the ITS plans from south of US 98 to south of W. Grover Cleveland Boulevard.  ITS concept of operations, design and plans included new gigabit Ethernet communications with supporting field installations of dynamic message signs (DMS) (Mainline and Arterial), closed circuit television (CCTV) camera sites, vehicle detection systems (VDS), bluetooth travel time systems (TTS) and highway advisory radio (HAR) systems. Work included designing electrical services with automatic transfer switches and permanent generator backup for all field devices. Wiring and fiber splicing diagrams, equipment details and specifications were developed as part of this project.

The new roadway’s ITS system has up-to-date CCTV Cameras and VDS for reliable traffic monitoring. DMS will allow Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise to communicate critical messages with motorists in a matter of seconds. Driver awareness and reliability is increased, and frustration is reduced due to the DMS and advanced traffic management systems (ATMS).
