Wekiva Parkway Extension of SR 429 Control Survey

The Central Florida Expressway Authority (CFX) was planning the “missing link” in the toll-system loop around Orlando. This extension of the existing system would complete the west leg of the SR 429, connecting to I-4. This project would consist of multiple sections of roadway design and construction, administered by two separate agencies, CFX and FDOT District Five, across three counties, Orange, Lake and Seminole. CFX needed both a network of high accuracy control monuments established to control the entire multi-part system on a single control base and controlled aerial photography that could be used in the planning and design phases.

DRMP, as part of the control survey team, constructed poured-in-place concrete monuments to be used as the primary control for the future design and construction phases of the proposed 20+ mile project. Static GPS observations were performed on 70 stations and the resulting raw data was sent to the prime survey consultant firm for compilation and final adjustment. Elevations were established on the same points by using digital levels to quickly tie new stations to existing control benchmarks. Aerial targets were also set to control aerial photography and photogrammetric mapping using redundant RTK GPS methods.

The resulting control network provided an overall, interconnected control network of highly accurate control stations that were used to control the various sections of the Wekiva Parkway.
