The Lane Construction Corp. and DRMP Win the 2024 DBIA Florida Region Project of the Year Award for the SR 538 (Poinciana Parkway) Widening

November 26th, 2024

ORLANDO, Fla. – Congratulations to The Lane Construction Corp. (Lane) and DRMP, Inc. (DRMP) Design-Build Team for winning the 2024 Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) Florida Region Project of the Year Award in the Structures Category.

This award recognizes the project team’s outstanding work on the SR 538 (Poinciana Parkway) Widening project from Ronald Reagan Parkway to CR 580 (Cypress Parkway), which widened the existing two-lane undivided expressway to a four-lane divided expressway for 7 miles. This $96.6 million project also included new bridges over the Reedy Creek Mitigation Bank (RCMB), Marigold Avenue, and KOA Street using Florida I-Beams and founded on prestressed concrete piles. The RCMB bridge is over 1-mile long and was designed to minimize environmental impacts and allow for the safe passage of wildlife. The project also included more than 2 miles of noise walls, drainage, intelligent transportation systems, all-electronic tolling, and utility upgrades.

The DRMP/Lane Team delivered the project for the Central Florida Expressway Authority (CFX) on time and within budget and incorporated several functional design elements to improve operational efficiency, end-user comfort and function, and productivity/business value. These included separating SR 538 traffic for safety, realigning Cypress Parkway for better traffic flow, revising the RCMB bridge pile configuration, installing wrong-way detection, and optimizing ramp alignment.

The widening of SR 538 is an important aspect in meeting Osceola County’s rapidly growing population needs. The additional capacity improves access for residents and tourists to travel throughout Central Florida’s regional transportation networks, theme parks, and the Orlando metro area.

DRMP’s Senior Vice President of Alternative Delivery, TJ Lallathin, PE, DBIA, praised the Team's ability to overcome challenges and deliver a successful project.

“Being part of a Team that not only met but exceeded expectations under such challenging conditions reflects the dedication and collaboration of everyone involved,” he said. “This project showcases our commitment to delivering innovative and sustainable solutions that serve the needs of Central Florida's growing infrastructure while preserving the environment."
