DRMP Experts to Lead Discussion on Coastal Resiliency at ASCE-ACB EWRI Seminar

May 15th, 2025

ORLANDO, Fla. – With Florida experiencing an increase in severe weather events and rising sea levels, DRMP leaders Ryan Mitchell, PE, and Josh Norman will present coastal resilience strategies at the 39th Annual ASCE-ACB Environmental & Water Resources Institute (EWRI) Seminar, hosted by the American Society of Civil Engineers East Central Branch.

Mitchell, DRMP’s drainage design group leader, and Norman, disaster resilience and sustainability practice leader, will deliver their presentation, “Enhancing Coastal Resiliency and Funding Opportunities for Restoration Projects,” at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 16, at Second Harvest Food Bank in Orlando.

As natural disasters, including hurricanes and tornadoes, become more frequent and severe, protecting Florida’s infrastructure has never been more critical. The presentation will explore the growing importance of green-grey infrastructure – a hybrid approach that combines natural (green) systems with traditional (grey) infrastructure – to enhance resilience, sustainability, and functionality in strengthening coastal communities against major storm events.

“By integrating green and grey infrastructure, we can maximize benefits such as flood mitigation, improved water quality, and climate adaptation while minimizing environmental impact and maintenance costs,” Mitchell said.

The State of Florida has significantly increased its focus and funding on resiliency projects over the past decade, and protecting infrastructure through these types of projects will reduce the need for costly maintenance and reconstruction.

The presentation will highlight the unique challenges of Florida’s coastal environments and explore the niche design practice of coastal resiliency.

“Some of the design aspects that are part of these projects are very new approaches in Florida,” Mitchell said, adding that one key takeaway he hopes attendees leave with is, “That these projects are necessary and successful.”
