10th Street Widening

The Volusia County 10th Street widening project consisted of the complete reconstruction and realignment of 10thStreet from Myrtle Avenue to US 1 along with upgrading a major Florida East Coast (FEC) Railroad crossing. The 10th Street corridor contains several canal crossings and storm drain crossings. The main body of water, Gabardy Canal, is both tidal and riverine. Canals G16, G11, G15 and the Gabardy canal all drain a 6,000-acre basin which is prone to flooding.

The new culvert extends (1,201-LF) from the existing FDOT Bridge culvert, 790117, to the west sideof the FEC Railroad crossing. The existing culvert under US 1 will remain in place while the FEC’s wooden trestlebridge will be replaced. The new section of 10th Street involves a 4-lane divided roadway with 4-foot bicyclelanes and an eight-foot wide sidewalk. The existing open Gabardy canal will be enclosed with a double barrel CBC. The culvert section was installed west of the existing culvert under US 1 contains two 10-foot by 7-foot cells and the culvert section west of Junction Box 1 contains two 10-foot by 6-foot cells.

These upgrades will provide the “missing link,” which is essential to the safe and efficient flow of traffic through the corridor. DRMP’s construction services expertise helped the client to accomplish its improvement goals.
